For the Design department, engage in the community literally means to put into practice the programme’s philosophical directive of creating links and engaging with Montreal communities via student internships that consist in collaborative projects and public artworks. This class aims at creating sustainable development tool in digital literacy, art and communications.
In this this class, the student prepare two internship of approximately 20-hour of implication each. One is conduct in the fall term and the other in the winter term.
Concordia students work with an individual, a group of participants or directly with an organization to produce: a book / music / postcards / posters / newsletter / web design / video or board games / digital reflexive portfolio / animation / film / painting / sculpture / dance / installation /…
Some other Concordia students will be focusing their activities around the editions of work: preparing shows / set up website for the projects / prepare a printed brochure / produce CD or DVD.
Few others can also spend this class in a more reflexive ways: finding new partnership / develop a series of workshop / producing video interviews / realising a video documentary / finding new ways and approaches to design and community engagement.Some other Concordia students will be focusing their activities around the editions of work: / preparing shows / set up website for the projects / prepare a printed brochure / produce CD or DVD.
Those internships could be conducted at Concordia University, in a community or non-profit organization, or both. Quite often, the second internship follows on from the first one with the same organization.

This video was shoot in partnership with DESTA the Black Youth Network and The University of Concordia (Design Art) through Israël Dupuis Master Thesis project at UQAM (communication).
It is the result of the collaboration between DESTA participants (Cedric kabango, Iman Brown, T'nias Robertson, Azariah Robertson (Triston), Mustapha Thomson (Moose), Shavoun Mclean (Widget) Concordia students (Meryam Joobeur and Derek Bradscome) under the direction of the Design lecturer Israël Dupuis.
This collective creative was put online to promote collaborative project and raise awareness toward the differences in our society. It states that everyone has to go through his own struggle and that we should understand and help each other to get through them.
From the "making off" this video, a 45 min video collage (Indignato Va Versum) was made. This ethnographic film is the core of Israel's Dupuis thesis la création collective multimédia chez les jeunes à risque: un moyen pour aider à passer au travers des coups dur.. It explore the use of direct cinema techniques in conjunction with art-therapy and gestalt therapy intervention framework. This work is the base ground for relational aesthetic approaches to collective creation in the context of proximity work. It is a trade-off from youth worker help relation to the development of sincere relation between the artist and the participants (both of them bean considers equal in the creating process).

This project consists of a series of book collectively created with youth form Kangiqsujuaqand, a northern village in Nunivak. Directed by Israël Dupuis, design students had to produce a book in collaboration with Innu students through social networking exchange. .
At the end of this yearlong project, through completion of multiple fundraises, youth from the north were able to fly to Montreal with their teachers and youth workers. They took possession of their book at Concordia University during the end year show of the class DART 481 Design Outreach (teach by Israël Dupuis).
This project is the ground for further research on how collective creation and the tools of computer arts could be beneficial to school perseverance with traditional society in the North of Quebec.
